Medicare Supplement Insurance Star Ratings & Quality Score
Many people are starting to learn more about the "Medicare Star Ratings" and this is starting to cause some confusion. It is first of all, most important, to understand that there is a major difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement Plan. These types of policies are in essence "supplementing" Medicare, but work in two very distinct ways.
The reason for saying this is because Medicare Advantage Plans do have star ratings and Medicare Supplement Plans (aka Medigap) do not have star ratings. The 5-star rating system used by Medicare only applies to Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Part D drug plans. The 5-star rating system is not at all applied to Medicare Supplemental Insurance.
Medicare Supplement Insurance companies are typically rated more based on their financial stability and A.M. Best is the financial rating agency that is used most of the time to determine the stability of a company. A.M. Best Medicare Supplement Ratings will be as follows:
A.M. Best Financial Rating System
|A++ & A+||Superior|
|A & A-||Excellent|
|B++ & B+||Good|
|B & B-||Fair|
|C++ & C+||Marginal|
|C & C-||Weak|
|E||Under Regulatory Supervision|
Some companies are also listed as "NR" or not rated. This does not necessarily mean the company is not stable or very risky, it is just something to look into.
