The 2011 Medicare Open Enrollment Period lasts from October 15th to December 7th. This period has changed from last year during the 2010 season. During the Medicare Open Enrollment Period of 2011, seniors looking to change health insurance plans will be able to do so. Many people have Medicare Advantage Plans, and with all of the recent changes, many people are re-thinking their options and considering a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Policy.
Medicare Supplement Plans are NOT the same as Medicare Advantage Plans. Medicare Advantage Plans are a replacement of Medicare coverage, whereas Medicare Supplement Plans are a "secondary" type of coverage, and supplement Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans are subsidized by Medicare - that is the primary way these plans are funded.
With the current healthcare legislation in congress, $132 billion in funding cuts to the Medicare Advantage system are coming. This is a negative sign to these plans that already hive high out-of-pocket costs. More and more people every year are considering Medicare Supplement Insurance. This type of coverage supplements Medicare and will pay for the gaps & expenses that are not fully covered by Medicare. Medicare Supplement Plans are nice because they can reduce, and even eliminate out-of-pocket expenses like co-pays, deductibles, etc. With Medicare Supplements (aka Medigap), you also have the ability to choose any doctor or hospital within the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
